SAN JOSE HILLS, Los Angeles County — A final county historic context study published in August 2025 documents the community’s transition from agricultural land to a residential neighborhood with equestrian traditions.
The report calls the Walnut Islands section an approximately 3.8-square-mile unincorporated area. Early development included horse stables and Spanish Colonial Revival homes; following World War II, more Ranch-style and Minimal Traditional homes were built. The county’s 2024 reconnaissance survey found more than 78 percent of existing structures were over 50 years old.
What the percentage does not mean
An older building is not automatically eligible for protected historic landmark status. The survey is useful evidence for neighborhood planning, but an owner seeking a designation or alteration permit must consult the county’s detailed inventory and current preservation rules for the property.
The study separates Walnut Islands from nearby West San Dimas; results for the former should not be presented as an exact age distribution for every San Jose Hills neighborhood.
